Success in the game depends, mainly, on chakra, just like the series. You amass chakra points when you successfully attack your opponent(physically) and they drop little orbs that recharge it. When you have enough chakra, you press the button to perform an attack, at which point you need to make physical contact with your foe to successfully complete the move. This might be a good time to mention one of the downsides to this game, while the special move scenes are EPIC, they take you, completely, out of the action(a fault it shares with a lot of games like DragonBall Z) while your enemy’s life takes a huge hit.
One improvement, though some disagree, that this game has over its predecessors is the presence of team action. Not only is it present but it’s all but necessary to complete Heroes Mode. Your choice of team will also affect the power-ups, bonuses, and other niceties available to you throughout the game. For fights, you can choose the order in which your team members fight. This is important, because your team’s chakra and health are carried over, requiring you to think carefully about your team management – strategy bonus!
Another cool feature is that, in heroes mode, it’s possible to earn stat bonuses, and such, which are used to power-up your characters. Unfortunately, these have no effect on those used in Heroes Mode, but only in other parts of the game. Still, it’s pretty nice as it incorporates the constant progression factor, associated with the addictive nature of RPG games.
All in all, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Heroes for PSP is a decent port of a console game to a hand-held. Most of the features remain, while some new ones were added(most notably the highly-anticipated team mode). Resistance:Retribution, the first version of the Resistance franchise, for a portable console, generated mixed expectations. Many, including me, thought they couldn’t possibly bring it over successfully and I’ll tell you why in one word- aim. That’s it. The PSP’s infamous lack of a second analog stick(what would have been used for aim if this were an exact port) made us all wonder how they would do it. We could aim with the arrow keys but how would we move? You get the drift.
Sony proved us wrong – big time. While they didn’t create a new analog stick attachment for the purpose(lol), they did change the way weapons are used, to fit the console. The new system of aiming uses a style that locks on to all the opponents on the screen in sequence, when the right button is pressed, and holds them in the “lock” until changed again. This allows you to select a foe and start firing, without needing to constantly adjust your aim, (Grand Theft Auto:San Andreas players should understand this technique perfectly) so long as they remain in the screen view.
Putting, what should have been, the most obvious fault aside the graphics are beautiful. This game makes full use of the PSP’s exceptional graphics processing hardware and creates an immersive, bordering on HD, experience. Unlike a lot of other games with pretty graphics, Resistance:Retribution runs seamlessly without the annoying freezes, and glitches, associated with some games of this type. In sharp contrast, the audio quality is, to say the most, adequate. The voice-acting is somewhat shoddy but good enough so the game makes sense. As for the in-game sounds, the sound more artificial than they should, but maybe that’s just my pickiness.
Gameplay might have been expected to be easier, with the changes to aiming, but the boys at Sony found ways to balance it out. Enemies can come, and attack, from anywhere – directly in front of you, from behind, raining attacks from above, or a sneak attack from below. Often, you find yourself under attack from all directions, especially if you’re careless and tarry in getting rid of the enemies as they come.
One other point, worthy of mention, is the absolute hilarity of the main character – James Grayson. His sharp tongue and witty, albeit harsh, comments provide much needed comic relief to a dark game. He does makes some stereotypical insults against both the English, and the French, however but it’s unlikely that many people from these countries will take it personal(unless they’re just being thin-skinned wimps!).
All in all, Resistance:Retribution, for PSP, does the series justice and is fun, addictive and thrilling. It’s only flaw is the poor sound quality but you’ll be too immersed in the graphics to care.
