There is a controversy over which death knight spec or build is the best for death knight leveling. It is fairly easy to argue for either of the three trees since each tree has its bonuses. However when we evaluate which tree is truly a death knight’s best friend we have to look for talents that will mitigate damage in one on one and group encounters; allow for self-healing to decrease downtime if not eliminate it; and talents that allow for faster movement (because we all hate to run slow). There is only one tree that does all of those things – Unholy. This is not to say that the other trees will not work, because believe you me, that sometimes you will wish you had rune tap or extra damage mitigation from frost talents!
For our purposes we will look at level 61 talent specs because this is just about the level you will be when you finally leave Ebon Hold and surrounding territories.
The best death knight leveling spec: UNHOLY
Benefits:
* 20% increased mount speed: get to quest locations much faster – will save you hours in the long run
* Master of Ghouls:permanent summoned pet – excellent threat agro and additional damage for multiple targets
* Bone Shield – direct damage reduction
* Awesome Heals through Death Strike – affected by the number of diseases on target, 4 in our case
* Summoned Gargoyle for burst damage – comes in handy when you’re fighting an elite for a group quest
* Unbeatable AOE (area of effect) damage – Desecration and Unholy Blight will let you manage multiple targets
Expectations:
The most DPS currently possible for death knight beginners. Talents can be added to preference as your character levels up – blood tree recommended. Little or no downtime unless you’re constantly fighting groups of mobs. Solid pvp build for those on pvp servers who get jumped unexpectedly. Decreased questing time due to a faster mount (20%) which will end up saving a lot of time in the long run plus allow you to escape unwanted situations with ease.
The 2nd best death knight leveling build: BLOOD
Benefits:
* Survivability – increased parry chance and increased armor bonus: allowing you to mitigate more damage
* Improved Rune Tap for heal bursts (although limited with cooldowns)
* Good damage – heart strike cleave and increased critical strike chance through talents
Expectations:
You certainly cannot expect to do as much damage to multiple targets as with unholy build, however the damage on single targets is very good and sometimes comes in very handy when you are facing a group quest with an elite monster several levels above you. Having the ability to kill elites on your own will save you a lot of questing time and give access to quick experience.
The 3rd best death knight leveling tree: FROST
Talent Tree
Benefits:
* Depending on your equipment you may tank instances
* 40% armor and 10% strength boost from Toughness and Unbreakable Armor
* Amazing burst damage through Howling Blast, Frost Strike and Obliterate with help from Annihilation
Expectations:
Despite great damage in the frost tree, you will find yourself with much more downtime after facing a group of mobs. Single targets should do little to phase you but when it comes to fighting elites – you’re in trouble. As you may notice, neither Frost or Blood trees give you a running buff – bummer. Critical strikes are sporadic and you are looking for constant damage rather than bursts when you are fighting mobs that may only live several seconds.
Summary:
Do yourself a favor and go unholy – it will save you a lot of time, make things easier and it is a lot of fun! Not only does unholy offer the maximum dps, but it also allows for crowd control, great self-healing and you have a companion that will fight for you until you’re both doomed – who doesn’t like a little buddy by their side taking away their agro when they need the help most!
