Begin An Web Based Business From Your Hobbies.

Do you have a hobby? Is there something that you enjoy so much that is what you would rather be doing? If so, why not turn your hobby into a internet business, your hobby might be your next job. There are hobbies that make money without feeling like you are doing work. If you like to write or do genealogy or make dolls, these are all money makers if you go about it in the right way, you can start an internet business that doesn’t seem like work.

There are alot of people who would like to have the talent you have when it comes to your hobbies. But everyone has something they are better at than anything else. So your talent might not be theirs but something they do may seem impossible to you.

When you find something that is interesting to you such as genealogy, there are many others who are interested in knowing about their family history as well. It might just be they do not know how to research to find out everything they can. Or the time is not available to them. It takes hours sometimes to search through census records and all the histories of the different families that came from various backgrounds.

The hobbies that make money will be the ones you might not even consider. There is a call for anything you can think of that you do well. Do you like to sew? There are people who will pay large amounts of money for handmade items. If you know how to make quilts, this is another item that people actually travel to different areas of the country to buy. They are also available online since the internet has become such a popular medium for shopping.

The hobby that you have been doing for years can pay off. Are you a traveler? Do you like to visit out of the way places and see things that you do not normally see on the regular routes that most people travel? Creating a website is a great way to publish your travel experiences. This is becoming a popular way of traveling today. The same hotels and attractions that are seen every time someone goes on vacation are becoming mundane. The articles you write that let people see there are other attractions when vacationing can become quite popular. Anything out of the ordinary is one thing people like to know about.

If you are having trouble thinking of a hobby that you can turn into a business, think about all the things you have done over the years and which you enjoyed the most. There are alot of things you may do that you don’t think of as a hobby. Do not start something just for the purpose of turning a hobby into a business. The hobby must be something you love to do and have experience doing.

A website is a good idea to advertise your expertise. Marketing is very important to let people know the service you perform is available. This is absolutely imperative to let people who do not know you, have an idea of the services you can provide. To get your site listed in the search engines just do a search for “Flight Search Engine Submission Service”

Behemoth Working On New Game

gamereaction
Over on the behemoth developers blog Dan Paladin has announced that behemoth are working on a new game, after alien hominoid and castle crashers being so much fun I am really looking forward to this release and ofcourse getting to know more about the title.

Anyway, besides knowing that a game is being worked on making me all happy, he has also announced himself as the best blogger of 2009 (http://devblog.thebehemoth.com/?p=508) head over and check out the blog, maybe even there is some real data on the game now? :P
crashers
Today I have made some changes to the site:

1. Fixed the pagination system so it is not plugin dependant.
2. Removed ratings system completely
3. Put a spam check captcha in place.
4. Added some tweaks to the gamercard for better output of percentages (now I have a bar graph) and dates (parsing dates to timestamps and rendering from there instead of parsing a string and using that).

I have also decided to make a change to the blog system next time I have the chance:

1. Allow comments to be better formatted, possibly by using RTE in order to ensure ease of use.
2. Check links in comments are valid before creating the A tag. (Complete)
3. Parse all the realurl created links so that the & is replaced with “&”;
4. Create > last buttons on the pager. (Complete)
5. Only display valid links from comments (Complete)
6. censoring of comments (Complete – though I need to learn more bad words, only censoring four so far lol).
7. 360voice Pagination update (to use blogs plugin pagination) (Complete)
8. Show blog items last edit date (Complete)

Also today I have installed the alpha version of an indexed search function for the blogs. Basically it can search the blogs for a set of words (must be more than 3 letters long) and give back a list of results based on the relevance.

The search function consists of 3 TYPO3 extension plugins, one to handle the form one to handle the results and a backend module which handles the indexing of new and updated blogs.

The search relevance is yet to be based on sentences thus it works only with words currently however if I can think of a clever way to handle phrases without having to run a fulltext search on the blogs table then I will implement that also.

The search system is obviously still to be styled and lacks a pagination feature as yet but apart from that it seems to work.

If you see any errors from the script please give me a note in this blogs comments. Any suggestions are also welcome in the comments :P .

Editing Head Elements With Adobe Dreamweaver

Web pages are not actually the visually rich documents they appear to be; underlying each web page is HTML code. XHTML pages consist of a hierarchy of elements: the html element is at the top of the hierarchy and contains two sub elements : the head and the body. The body contains all of the elements which will be displayed in the browser window and the majority of which will be visible to the user. The head element, by contrast, contains information about the web page; meta information as it is sometimes called. In this article, we will look at the different ways in which Dreamweaver CS4 allows you to modify elements within the head of a web page, beginning with the title.

The title element should contain a broad description of the content of the page. It is extremely important that each page should have a title and that the title be pertinent to the page that contains it. Dreamweaver automatically adds a title element to every new page containing the text “Untitled Document”. Perhaps the easiest way of modifying the default title in Dreamweaver is simply to enter a title in the Document Title box of the Document toolbar which is normally displayed at the top of the page. An alternative is the choose Modify – Page Properties and then click on the Title/Encoding category on the left of the screen.

The title element is the only element which is syntactically required to be placed within the head element. In addition a number of optional meta elements may be placed which the head element to provide further information about the current page. One such meta element is created automatically by Dreamweaver along with the title: the content-type. This declares the character encoding to the browser and is particularly important if you have a site with an international audience. To specify the character encoding, choose Modify – Page Properties, click on the Title/Encoding category on the left of the screen and then choose an option from the Encoding drop-down menu.

The meta description element is one of the most important since, along with the page title, it is often displayed when your page shows up in the search engine results. The description should consist of a couple of sentences summarising the content of the page. To set the description in Dreamweaver, choose Insert – HTML – Head Tags – Description then enter your description in the dialogue box which appears.

Let’s just mention one final meta element: keywords. The keywords meta element should contain a list of the important words and phrases to be found on the current page. Only text that actually appears on the page should be listed. To create the meta keywords element in Dreamweaver, choose Insert – HTML – Head Tags – Keywords.

Hunter Class

Out of all the classes in World of Warcraft, the Hunter is by far the most versatile. Between the available talent builds, the pet options and their sheer prowess, it’s hard to go wrong with this class. If you are considered playing this class with your character, here is a comprehensive guide to success with the World of Warcraft Hunter.

Starting Out

One of the main keys to success in this class is making sure that your character is right for the job. You’ll need to look at your own personal strengths and make sure that they are a good fit with the abilities of a hunter. Although the name tends to conjure up images of tracking down and shooting animals, the hunter class is much more than that. They have definite strengths and weaknesses that can make playing this class a little tricky.

What a hunter excels at: Ranged warfare, including the use of bows, guns or crossbows. They are incredibly effective at dispatching their enemies with these means. Their tracking abilities are very strong and they are also very good at surviving. The use of pets for this class means that the pet can absorb much of the damage from an attack, leaving you with more time to play.

What they don’t excel at: Melee fighting is the most problematic for the hunter class. The class isn’t eligible for armor until you reach level 40, so this can be quite an issue in the early levels.

Now that you know what a hunter can and cannot do, you can begin to craft your strategy for dealing with enemies. Remember, the further off you are from danger, the better your chances of victory will be. It is very important to invest in a pet as a hunter since they can take up the slack when it comes to melee fighting. While they are getting up close and personal, the hunter can stay back and deal out damage from afar.

Picking a Profession for Your Hunter

Now that you’ve decided to play this class, you’re going to need to pick a profession that meshes well with a hunter’s innate abilities. Your best bet is going to be the combination of skinning and leatherworking since this will allow you to make your own armor. However, another great combination is mining and skinning since this will allow you to make enough money to quickly purchase additional armor and weapons.

The professions that really don’t mesh well with a hunter are alchemy, tailoring or enchanting. While they are incredibly useful for other classes, there just isn’t much that will benefit a hunter from these professions. A middle of the road profession that can be very useful is herbalism, since you can use this to make your own healing potions. This is very helpful until you can get a pet to assist you with melee fighting.

The Weapons

As we mentioned previously, the hunter excels at ranged warfare. You’re going to want to concentrate on bows and crossbows, or if you have the skill, guns as well. When you first start out, you’ll get a pretty basic bow, but you can purchase a more effective one as you progressive through the levels that will earn you more skill and help you become more accurate. There are also many ranged weapons that you can earn as you complete quests.

Enchanting Guide

Enchanting is a very popular profession in WoW, but is also one of the most difficult to learn. However, it is certainly time well spent since you will be able to use these abilities regularly. Enchanters have the ability not only to enchant items, by adding special attributes to them, but they can also disenchant items. This comes in handy in numerous occasions in the game.

While enchanting is not for everyone, if you do have a good deal of patience and you think that this skill would be of use to you, it’s truly worthwhile to give it a try. With the right strategy, learning your enchanting profession doesn’t have to be hard. In fact, we’re going to make it really easy for you.

Getting Started

Once you decide that you’re going to get into learning enchanting you’re going to need to find a trainer to get your apprenticeship. This is very easy to do and they are available in many locations in larger cities. Once you have this done, you’ll also need to choose a secondary profession. Most people pick tailoring, but your options are pretty open. Keep in mind that you won’t need to do any gathering for your profession, so you won’t need to pick a secondary profession that is based around gathering, such as mining.

Now, you’re going to need an item to enchant as well as the recipe for enchanting it. If you do plan to disenchant an item, please remember that this will effectively destroy it. Unfortunately, once you do this, there is no way to take back your disenchantment, so use it carefully.

Enchanted Armor set

Enchanting

Let’s start the actual process of enchanting. We’ll be working on an Enchant Bracer which is worn on the wrist to deflect objects. For this recipe, you’re going to need strange dust and lesser magic essence. If you don’t already have these items, you’ll need to purchase them from the auction house or from a vendor.

Once you have the items you need, you can open up your spellbook and go to the enchanting window. Just follow the instructions and you’ll have your first enchanted item. Now, this is an item that is for level 1, so you’ll need to keep going to get up past 300.

Disenchanting

At times, you may need to disenchant an item to collect the special dusts and poweders that you need. Open up your spellbook and select disenchant. Now move your mouse over to the item that you want to disenchant. It may take a few minutes to complete the process. Remember, there is no turning back once you start this process.

If you need to get dust and other items for your enchanting recipes, disenchanting items is probably the easiest and cheapest way to go about it. Here’s a quick guide to help you get what you need:

Dust – Green Armor
Essence – Green Weapons
Shard – Blue Items
Nexus Crystal – Purple Items (up to 60)
Void Crystals – Purple Items (after level 60)

What to Do With Your Skill

Now that you’re enchanting items, you’re going to need to do something with them. A lot of players like to trade enchanted items and this is the main reason that enchanting is considered one of the more social skills. You can also sell your items to other players or auction them off in the auction house. If you want another WoW Enchanting Guide you should check out this great wow strategy guide site.

Choosing An After Dinner Speaker For You Future Dinner

For those planning a sporting event, whether it be a charity evening, annual meeting or fund raising event, then the presence of one of the many top quality after dinner speakers that are available on the circuit can provide your event with not only a highlight to the evening, but also it can act as a draw to further potential dinners to bring even more attendees to your planned function. It can also give you a much needed boost to your function and even allow you to increase your ticket price.

To be able to contact most of these ex professional sports stars, you almost certainly will have to first go via their agents or approved after dinner speaker bureaus. It is highly unlikely that these celebrities will accept bookings directly and no doubt tasks such as sorting out the arrangements of travel, accommodation and what time to arrive at the event would certainly be beneath them.

Depending on where your event’s location is and the home of your chosen celebrity, on top of their advertised speaking fees you will be expected to pay additionally for either a car for them to travel to and from the venue, or even a night’s hotel accommodation for after the event. You might be given a choice of these up front or you might be told the celebrity’s preference, which might be dictated by the timing of the event and the speaker’s other appointments in their diary.

Professional sporting after dinner speakers don’t just attend and work with large dinner events where they stand at the front and talk to the audience. Many are also happy to attend a wide variety of dinner events, down to more intimate get to know events, where maybe half a dozen attendees have a lunch with the chosen celebrity. Or another alternative can be a question and answer session with your chosen sporting star answering questions from the audience.

Whilst they are at your function the celebrity may also be happy to compare a charity auction to help boost fund raising. In some cases, the speaker’s agent might even be able to help you to provide suitable signed merchandise on a sale or return basis for the charity auction, it’s well worth checking what is possible when you are negotiating.

Another point to clarify at an early stage when you are negotiating with the star’s agent is how much you can use the speaker’s name when advertising the future event. It is well worth passing the agent copies of press releases, flyers and the likes at an early stage, just so that they don’t turn around later and say that you have mis-represented their client. “An intimate evening with” might seem at first to you to be a perfectly fair way of advertising your quiet dinner for 20 people, but the celebrity involved might not see standing in front of a few dinner tables talking to the attendees in the same light and might want to reserve such descriptions for smaller events.

Casual Games May Be Recession-Proof; Companies Report Record Revenues, And Some Surprising Trends

Casual Games May Be Recession-Proof; Companies Report Record Revenues, and Some Surprising Trends
11/24/08

“Countercyclical” is a word you’re probably going to hear a lot in the coming months—from entrepreneurs professing that their businesses are not only recession-proof, but will actually fare better during lean times. It’s a word that the leaders of the casual games industry, which has a strong presence in both Seattle and Boston, have been using a lot lately. But in their case, so far, it seems to be true. Seattle-based Big Fish Games and Newton, MA-based WorldWinner both tell Xconomy that in October, while stocks were swooning and unemployment was swelling, they earned record revenues.

Casual games is the gaming industry’s term for break-time online games or small downloadable games like “Bejeweled” or “Diner Dash,” as opposed to console-based video games or all-absorbing multiplayer games like World of Warcraft. I’ve written about the Boston casual gaming cluster here, and Greg has covered Seattle-area gaming companies extensively.

Not all of the regions’ gaming companies are likely to be immune to the downturn. From talking with executives at gaming outfits in Seattle and Boston, it’s clear that there’s pessimism in the industry about Web advertising as a source of revenue, and about the prospects for survival for companies that get the bulk of their revenue from display ads. “For ad-based casual gaming companies, pretty much everyone agrees that it’s going to be tough for a while,” says Christopher Cummings, senior product manager for Gamesville, a gaming site owned by Waltham, MA-based Lycos. “Some startups probably won’t survive, and for others it might be lean times.”

But casual gaming companies with more ways to make money, such as charging customers for downloads or tournament play or licensing their games to other companies, may fare better—especially as computer owners turn to casual games as a less expensive diversion than going to a movie or eating out.

“One possibility in a downturn would be that people would have an aversion to games, because it’s discretionary spending,” says Jeremy Lewis, CEO of Big Fish Games, which gets most of its revenues from purchases of the downloadable games designed by its community of 650 freelance contributors. “But a second possibility is that people see it as an attractive alternative to other more expensive forms of entertainment. And a third would be that people who are out of work have more time to play games. We are certainly seeing the second effect, and maybe also the third.” Lewis says Big Fish’s October revenue was up a whopping 23 percent over September levels.

Gaming executives are also encouraged by surveys indicating that Americans plan to retrench during the recession by spending more time at home and less on activities like travel and theater-going. “Consumers are looking for entertainment options that they can enjoy at home with their families,” says Christian Meyer, chief marketing officer at WorldWinner. And that means “home entertainment is well positioned to withstand the downturn.”

Here’s a closer look at five major trends the gaming executives I spoke with are observing or predicting as the industry confronts changing economic conditions.

1. Game Players Spending More Time Online

Meyer says WorldWinner, where players pay a small fee to compete against other players in a variety of skill-based games, had more visitors in October than in any other month in its nine-year history, and is on track to set another record in November. But even at sites such as Gamesville, where traffic hasn’t increased as much, the people who do come are staying longer.

“The user base for Gamesville has been mainly flat, with a little bit of growth over the course of this year,” says Cummings. “But the amount of time that people are spending on the site has increased dramatically.” Not so long ago, the typical Gamesville user played for about 40 minutes; now the average visit lasts 90 minutes, an eternity in Web time.

And that means users see more ads while they’re on the site—which, along with the huge popularity of the site’s recently resurrected Bingo Zone, has helped to make the Gamesville division of Lycos profitable this year. “That’s a first in recent history,” Cummings says.

2. Casual Games Appealing to a Larger Cross-Section of Consumers

Online game companies have long seen women in their 30s and above as their core audience. WorldWinner and its sister site GSN.com, the online arm of TV’s Game Show Network, “tend to service Mom,” says Meyer. “It’s for those moments when the kids are in bed and she has a few moments to herself. It’s really ‘me’ time.”

Women may still make up the largest part of casual games’ user base, but at Gamesville, at least, those women are in a lower age bracket than they used to be. “We have noticed its been trending much younger over the past 12 months,” says Cummings. “As you might imagine, with Bingo being so big, our audience used to be a little older. Today, it’s more the college age group up to around age 54 that makes up the core audience.”

Lewis has observed something similar at Big Fish. “Our customer demographic skews from literally 5 years old to 95, but the peak is women 35 to 50 years old,” he says. But over time, the company has picked up many more users who are under 35 or over 50. “The bell curve is flattening,” says Lewis, who says the pattern is “consistent with the dynamics of other mass markets as they have matured.”

3. Casual and Mobile Gaming Positioned to Overtake PC and Console Gaming

With more people seeking inexpensive home entertainment, executives say, casual games could grow even faster than the red-hot console and PC game market, which pulled in more than $1.3 billion in October (a 19 percent increase over the same month in 2007). “Any industry sector with a B2B element is going to suffer,” predicts Xconomist Trip Hawkins, the founder and CEO of San Mateo, CA-based mobile game maker Digital Chocolate (and before that, founder of gaming mega-giant Electronic Arts). “With games, that means that brick and mortar retailers are cutting back on inventory purchases of boxed console games. Arguably, mobile games will fare the best, because it is not B2B—we only get paid when the consumer buys, and it is the lowest-priced form of gaming that does not have a free alternative.”

Jim Gregoire, vice president of marketing at Boston-based mobile social networking and gaming site MocoSpace, says his company is seeing that effect already. “We continue to see strong growth in our numbers through this downturn as the mobile Web grows in its influence and people look for cheap or free entertainment outlets,” Gregoire says. Page views for MocoSpace’s mobile games have been rising “on an equal plane with all other activity” on the site, he says. “It has come close to doubling since January”—helping to land MocoSpace at the top of Hitwise’s most recent rankings of mobile entertainment sites.

David Roberts is CEO of Seattle-based PopCap, which just rolled out a sequel to its blockbuster casual game “Bejeweled.” He says the recession is likely to spook some gamers into avoiding “higher-priced items that feel more like luxuries”—including, perhaps, those $30 to $60 PC and console games. “Consumers will be looking for more value in everything they buy, and they’ll defer second- and third-tier consumption until they know what’s going on in their lives—essentially a flight toward quality that I like to think will benefit games like those we make at PopCap,” Roberts says.

4. Some Types of Advertising Revenue Remain Strong

Typical Web banner ads and other forms of display advertising are gradually drying up as a revenue stream, say gaming executives. “As far as ad-driven gaming goes, demand for free game-play will probably go up, but I expect decreased advertising budgets will lead to a decline in available sponsorships,” says Roberts. (PopCap itself relies on a mix of game purchases, display advertising, video advertising, and, in partnership with WorldWinner, fee-based tournaments.) “There is so much inventory available across the board, so it comes down to where you can access the demographic you want more efficiently, and in that context there is a lot of competition,” adds Meyer of WorldWinner.

But some forms of advertising are still pulling in good money. “Here at Lycos we do have some experience surviving economic downturns, and one of the things that we did pretty early on was to create a family of strong brands with diversified revenue,” says Gamesville’s Cummings. “That’s basically how we survived when the bubble burst last time. And we spent the first half of this year diversifying our own revenue sources beyond display ads.” In particular, Gamesville has started offering video ads, for which advertisers have been paying “pretty spectacular” rates, according to Cummings.

Meyer points out that opportunities for cross-media exposure can also attract advertisers. WorldWinner happens to be part of Liberty Media, which also owns the Game Show Network. “We are in a little bit of a unique position, because we can pull media packages together,” says Meyer. “You can buy ad inventory on TV and have that link to customized elements that show up online. That gives us a leg up when we walk into an ad agency or an advertiser.”

5. Gaming Companies Growing in Some Areas, Retrenching in Others

While many tech startups are being forced to lay off staff to conserve cash, several casual game companies are still hiring. Big Fish, which has 340 employees, will likely grow by another 60 positions in 2009, Lewis told TechFlash last week.

WorldWinner, too, is looking for more developers. “We are one of the few players, at least here in Boston, that is hiring,” says Meyer. “A lot of of the candidates that I have talked to recently say ‘Wow, you guys are one of the few companies that is this upbeat and charged up.’”

But that doesn’t mean gaming companies are spending money as loosely as they used to. At the same time as it’s adding staff, for instance, WorldWinner has scaled back efforts to rewrite its Windows-based games for the cross-browser Flash multimedia format, so that they’ll run on Mac computers and browsers other than Internet Explorer. “We pulled in some of the R&D work to refocus resources on those things that have more immediate return on investment,” says Meyer. “On the GSN site we have doubled the portfolio of Flash games, but at WorldWinner we have not moved forward significantly there.”

Lewis, a veteran of Goldman Sachs, says that in a recession, the most important role for the CEOs of gaming outfits—or of any other type of company—is to ensure that their organizations are ready to adapt to changing conditions, and that they are meeting their customers’ needs.

“We’ve always questioned whether the Big Fish Games business is a defensive one or a countercyclical one, and thus far the data demonstrates that it is countercyclical,” Lewis says. “But our focus ever since we founded the company has been on improving our understanding of our developer community and our game customers, and having that understanding reflected in the things we produce. That’s something we can control, irrespective of the economic cycle.”

Of course, Valentine’s E cards aren’t meant to replace gifts, chocolates or the usual candlelight dinner, but they can be sent as a indication for what lies ahead on this most romantic day of the year.

A bit of History

There are many ideas as to the origin of Valentine’s Day. Some Historians have theorised that the celebration stems from various historical figures, but the consensus is that the occasion arises from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to denounce Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D which has become our current day of love. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a adiue note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it “From Your Valentine”. Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by the sending of poems and simple gifts such as flowers. There was often a social gathering or a party.

In the United States, Miss Esther Howland is given credit for sending the first valentine cards. Commercial printed valentines cards were introduced in the 1800’s. The spirit of love and romance continues today as valentines cards are sent out with sentimental verses and children exchange valentine cards at school. In recent years the rise of the E-card has seen the birth of a new way of sending a romantic message to your sweetheart, and it has become one of the busiest days of the year for E card websites.
